I’ve spent seven years of my life devoted to studying the art of magic- the art of deception. Magic is making someone believe something that is simply not true. The art of making someone perceive a lie as their reality is surprisingly easy to do, but there are different levels to deception, each getting increasingly more difficult and devious. More powerful than deception, however, is truth. Deception cannot exist without truth because deception is merely a counterfeit of the truth. Absolute truth is what exists despite what others perceive.
There are three levels of deception:
The first level- The Misperception of Truth is recognizing that truth exists but not being able to perceive it. Most people are stuck in this category, recognizing absolute truth exists but not certain exactly what it is they’re looking at- assuming the girl that’s being cut in half has to be in one side of the box but not having a clue how that could be possible.
The second level- The Misrepresentation of Truth is much more complicated. This is where truth has been somewhat recognized and even slightly appreciated, but is then so perverted by other factors that even the piece of truth was had, becomes disqualified, despite its truth. “BUT I WAS HOLDING THE CARD THE WHOLE TIME”- the deceiver puts YOU in control without enough information for you to stand on, such that when the fullness of the illusion is revealed, the bit of truth you had becomes more of a stumbling block than of value to your overall perception. “The closer you look, the less you see.”
The third level- Misappropriation of truth is the most difficult level of deception to pull off because the fullness of truth is exposed, yet deception still takes hold. This level takes the fullness of truth and spins it in such a way that you no longer believe it. If the magician tells you, “the girl has been in the box the entire time,” you instantly assume that she has not been. But what if, knowing that you would not believe him, he told you the truth- encouraging you, indirectly, to believe the opposite. This level of deception is saved for the most devious of illusions.
Illusions are constantly changing, but truth is consistent. The girl is never actually levitating, she’s never actually disappearing from the box, and she has never actually been cut in half. What makes deception effective is the glitz, glam, and story around the deception. The truth has never changed, but the deception constantly has a new face. As John Steinbeck said, “We have only one story. All novels, all poetry, are built on the never-ending contest in ourselves of good and evil. And it occurs to me that evil must constantly respawn, while good, while virtue, is immortal. Vice has always a new fresh young face, while virtue is venerable as nothing else in this world is.”
There is a massive Misappropriation of Truth is everywhere. Only love is venerable and does not delight in deception, but rejoices with truth.
Truth exists in this world and it is up to you to find it, believe in it, and never let it go. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, and self-control will sustain you eternally; and will never change despite the ways that people may attempt to deceive you. I encourage you to pursue the full revelation of these things and reject anyone that attempts to deceive you from the pursuit of truth.
Constantly looking for magic in everything. This is my journey.
